Seawal at Burnham-on-Crouch

Tors Duce is a textile artist living in Burnham-on-Crouch, Essex, England.

Most of her work reflects the beautiful surroundings of East Anglia, especially the River Crouch and the marshland of the Dengie Peninsular.

Artist's statement:

I love working with fabric and thread to create unique and individual 'one off' pieces.

I am inspired by colour and texture which I reflect in my work by using a variety of materials combined with both hand and machine sewing. I hand dye threads, yarns & fabrics and combine them with other textiles and fibres to create natural colour and texture in my work. I create a unique fabric for each item I make by layering fabrics and then using machine embroidery to give a special depth of colour and iridescence.

I am fascinated by how the tides and weather conditions alter the surface of the water, the sandbanks and the shape of the coast. To reflect our lack of control over the forces of nature, a lot of my work uses a water-soluble stabiliser. Once I have finished all my stitching the stabiliser has to be washed away which gives an element of unpredictability to the final shape and texture of the work.

I am also very interested in recycling and the idea of deconstructing in order to reconstruct an item of beauty.
